Kits House Grand Opening

The Kitsilano Neighbourhood House project, which involved the renovation and heritage preservation of two buildings on the Kits House site and the addition of 15 units of affordable seniors housing, officially opened today.  Government officials, staff and board members, residents of the new building, friends and community members joined together to celebrate the grand opening.

Wai Young, MP for Vancouver South, said "this is an exciting day for Vancouver.  "Here is a fantastic example of levels of government working together with the community".  She commended the project concept with its community centre, daycare and housing, saying "lives of low income seniors in the community will change for the better".

Andrew Wilkinson, MLA for Vancouver Quilcena, said the project "fits into the neighbourhood and looks great", lauding the "real Kitsilano architecture" and that the project was build to target LEED Gold certification.

Maureen, a resident of the new seniors project described how she had been born and raised in Kitsilano and was so delighted to live in the project saying she was just who the project was built for: "an old lady from Kitsilano who had no money left after raising 5 kids".

The project features 25 childcare spaces.  Some of those children joined the festivities to present the opening day speakers with flowers in hand painted pots.
